Kansas Community Accused of Discriminating Against Families with Children
The Justice Department recently sued the owners and operators of a Kansas community comprised of 16 one-bedroom units, alleging that they violated the Fair Housing Act on the basis of familial status.
The case began with a HUD complaint filed by a former resident, who alleged that the community terminated her lease after she asked to add her baby granddaughter to her lease. Allegedly, the owners and managers also made statements indicating that they had a policy of not renting to households with children. After conducting an investigation, HUD issued a charge of discrimination and referred the case to the Justice Department.
